I know, I know, Elrond actually said “Nine companions – so be it. You shall be the Fellowship of the Ring.”
But I have to admit, the way he put it irked me not a little.
You see, Elrond and I are in the same High Priests’ Group. But no one else at the Council in Rivendell are Mormons. So I thought it was a little hasty of Elrond to use the word “Fellowship” for this activity. After all, we reserve the concept of “fellowshipping” for social intercourse between members, do we not? Among the Gentiles, where we have proselyting interests, the concept is one of *friendshipping*. First things first, all in its proper order.
Elrond means well. He’s been the High Priest Group Leader since forever. But he’s always been one to blur lines, to obscure the meaning behind our committees and councils. It seems to me that we need to be friendshipping the others, and then we can fellowship them all we want later, through home teaching and such, once they’re actually baptized members of the Church.
Or am I making a semantic mountain out of a mole-hill?
