“What the Church means to me”

Elder Richard Hinckley has suggested that we keep a record of “what membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints means to me.” I invite you to contribute your thoughts below, thus creating a bloggernacle e-record to reflect Elder Hinckley’s challenge. Here’s what the Church means to me:

Friendship and fellowship, the kind that transcends nations, colour, and circumstance. A sense of reason and purpose amidst the madness of this world. A vision of Greater Things, a perspective of God and humanity that takes our souls to the stars but demands we keep our feet on the earth. The beauty of practical ethics, morality and sacrifice. Covenants and solemn promises for good. Family. Angel Moroni in the sunshine. The terrible empathy of Mormonism’s weeping God. The latter-day testament of Jesus the Christ. And much more…

Please add your thoughts.

Conference Report (Immigration)

Saints from around the world convened on Temple Square yesterday, and here’s my report of the conference proceedings–of two immigration bills before the U.S. Congress. I’ll summarize some of the public policy April_2006_statute of liberty jig 239 pix 4 pieces gone supernovachoices offered by the proposed changes, then end with these questions:

Do LDS scripture and teachings inform your/my/our attitudes towards U.S. immigration policy, and, should they?

But first, here are some notes on the context in which we find ourselves:

  • Through the mid 20th century, U.S. laws regarding who could immigrate to the U.S. (and who could become a citizen) were racially restrictive, with a judicially and legislatively expressed goal of shaping the U.S. populace to be “white.” As one of various instances of this, in 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act preventing Chinese from immigrating here. As another, in 1921, Congress established a temporary quota system expressly designed “to confine immigration as much as possible to western and northern European stock”; this quota system was made permanent in the National Origin Act of 1924 (these quotas were ended in 1965).
  • The U.S. response to the presence of large numbers of illegal immigrants has been varied. In the early 1930s, we Read the rest of this entry »

The History of Pre-Heaven

Professor Terryl Givens is the James A. Bostwick Chair of English at the University of Richmond. He is the author of By the Hand of Mormon, The Viper on the Hearth, and most recently The Latter-day Saint Experience in America. We invited him to guest post regarding his latest project.

I am currently involved in a project regarding which I would be happy to have input and suggestions from a larger LDS/academic community. John Tanner and I are working on a book that will be the first to attempt a comprehensive “history of pre-heaven.” With the working title “The Life Before: Pre-mortal Existence in Western Thought,” our study will be organized chronologically and topically, yet aim at much more than a survey or catalogue. We are attempting not only to document the presence of this idea historically but to attend to its meaning for those who embrace it, the reasons for its prevalence, the literary, cultural, ideological, and theological functions that is has served, and the reasons for its demise or disappearance at various times in Western history. April Fools – Letter to the Daily Universe

Dear Esteemed Sirs:

I say, it was quite enough to suggest in a most recent article that the dwarves be revoked their beard cards. I nearly lost my second breakfast as I read your fine periodical.
It would have been a frightful mess for the staff at the Cougar Eat to clean up, I can tell you that. I shuffled off right quick to my dorm room in Helaman Holes to write you this letter with not a bit of delay. Read the rest of this entry »

April Fools – Brokeback Mount Doom

Merry and Pippin sit under a tree in the Shire smoking the longbottom leaf. Sam has just married Rosie.

Merry: Did I ever tell you about my second cousin Rapscalion Brandybuck?

March_2006_merry_pippin03

Pippin: Old Rap? I’ve heard of him.

Merry: You may think you have, Pip, but there’s something else. You know, he… he was a bit different to the other hobbits. Read the rest of this entry »

April Fools – Volunteers Requested

March_2006_saruman_lrg Many of you will no doubt remember my last, highly successful experiment in blending opposite species: the Uruk-Hai, which were a mixture of the races of Orc and Man. Many of you are only vaguely familiar with my exploits from the biased, inflammatory, and even libellous account written by J. R. R. Tolkien and filmed by Peter Jackson (Will the world never learn that pragmatism is a virtue? I was only working with Sauron in order to bring about change from the inside!). April Fools – Gandalf to Fans: I AM NOT DUMBLEDORE!

Perhaps I’ve been unclear, folks. A beard, a funny hat, the ability to communicate with magical March_2006_Gandalfcreatures — fair enough. I should have seen this coming. So, let me then just clarify, for the fans, for the kids. I AM NOT DUMBLEDORE, LOSERS! Read the rest of this entry »
