“I’m puzzled–I don’t understand why I can’t have everything I want.”(1)
(1) Actual quote uttered by my little 29-year old brother, Daryl, who is autistic. He was trying to understand why he can’t have a brand new house like his older sister does.

Ben: “So Seth, have you got any ideas for my fiction machine?”
Me: “No Ben, I haven’t.”
Ben: “Why not?!”
Me: “Because I haven’t really thought much about it.”
Ben: YOU HAVEN’T?!”
Me: “No Ben, I haven’t.”
Ben: “Why not?!”
Me: “I’ve got a lot to do Ben. I got job to do, kids to take care of…”
Ben: “Well you should make time!”
Me: “I don’t want to make time Ben.”
Ben: “What??!! You just want everything to be same -old?
Me: “Yes Ben.”
[Conversation with my 20 year old autistic brother. I think I've had this same conversation with him about 6 different times at least. But then... I'm out-of-state. My siblings who still live near home get this talk a LOT more than me.]

Ha, I can relate, Seth. It’s fascinating to me how the autistic mind works. But then, I’m out of state, too, so I can afford some detached bemusement. My poor mother is the one that gets to have the same conversations with my brother over and over again.

Kevin, at least your brother is honest enough to say it out loud. Most of us think it but just never say it so bluntly. (i.e. I don’t understand why I can’t hold on to my pet religious belief.)

“I don’t know, I just…I thought Paul Rodgers would look different.”
Actual quote by my husband, who is not autistic. (We were listening to Bad Company.)
