SAP, honestly it would take a separate post. Looking back over 40 years in the church, suffice it to say that I think it was a truly unique – and deeply prophetic – talk.
I am very impressed with President Uchdorf. I thought he was chosen because of his heritage, to help ease transition for other countries but…He is a great man with a wonderful testimony. It feels right to have him be a member of the first presidency.
Will President Monson’s (and his Presidencie’s) legacy be the transforming of the church into a truly worldwide church, less Utah-centric and America-centric?
Will President Monson’s (and his Presidencie’s) legacy be the transforming of the church into a truly worldwide church, less Utah-centric and America-centric?
I think it’s funny that she goes on about how it’s a woman’s deepest calling (I don’t remember the exact wording) to nurture, but her quotations support the idea of both parents nurturing their children.
Amen Sister Tanner! Thank you for saying that you delight in the chastity of ALL women and men! I am sure the Lord does too! Oh that more women would speak at General Conference…
Paradox, they don’t. They’re for amplification for those who have trouble speaking loud enough for the microphone. It’s not a good sign for Pres. Packer. But I suppose the SWAT-style throat mics were out of the question.
THat was a pretty impressive travelogue that Boyd K PAcker Gave.
Who’s the oldest Apostle now. L Tom Perry was born Aug 5, 1922. I He’s older than both Pres. Monson and Pres Packer. Anyone know when Wirthlin was born? I think he may be the only one close in age to the rest of them.
kca – He’s been a prophet, seer and revelator for over 40 years; he’s been a president for two months and a sustained president for one day. “He couldn’t say” is ludicrous.
Why must every speaker wear a white shirt? Why can’t we see a diverse set of shirt colors, as if to represent the wonderful diversity of God’s children? Until we are comfortable with yellow, black and brown shirts, how can we minister to people who don’t look exactly like us?
Ray – Why do you think it is that he focuses on the administrative, “president” part of his calling more than the “prophet” part of his calling then, regardless of the timing?
If you had been something for over 40 years and something else for two months (or one day), wouldn’t you mention wanting to do well at that new responsibility? I don’t see anything profound or implied or buried or worth spending time considering. I see it simply as a natural desire to do something new and difficult well.
I’m new here and not sure about the unwritten rules about what one does and does not say. But I honestly find it interesting that the summary of a moving talk giving direction — believe in Christ, be more kind to others — the language chosen to sum up is pretty administrative “do all I can in . . . directing the affairs of his church”. I’m not trying to take anything away from Pres Monson’s role. Apologies if I’ve offended anyone on the thread.
As much as I loved Elder Bednar’s talking in a recent conference about not being offended, Pres. Monson’s simple invitation to “come back” is so much more effective.
#36 & #38 – This is the tune that was in the pre-1985 hymnbooks (in the choir section, so most congregations never sang it). Apparently the music committee agreed with you about the tune, so we got the current one (which is now sung quite often because people like the tune as much as they do, despite the oddity of some of the lyrics).
It was nice to here Sis Tanner. Not as criticism just as curiousity, I was wondering do we normally here from sisters during the Sunday session? What a wonderful sister truly dedicated to the young women of the church!
Thumbs up: Sis. Tanner’s talk. About 6-8 times she was halfway through a sentence that I just *knew* was going to make me really annoyed, and then somehow the sentence ended completely differently from what I expected. “[Youth] preparing to be missionaries and mothers [me: arggg!! not that irritating dichotomy again!] and fathers [me: oh wait, she's saying girls growing to be missionaries and mothers and boys growing to be missionaries and fathers--rock on!]” And the bit where she said that men’s chastity is just as important as women’s chastity was awesome (took some chutzpah to essentially correct the scriptures!). Kudos, Sis. Tanner!
Paradox (#65), this is a time of change. We have new leaders. Times of change are always good times to renew the invitation to recommit ourselves to follow Christ, to bear one another’s burdens, to lend strength. This happens on a ward level and stake level as well.
Pres. Monson was called as bishop at age 22?! Wow! Now he is acting something like a bishop for the whole world, in the sense that he looks after and oversees the administration of the welfare of all, within and without the church. I believe that this new calling is what he prays for help in doing well.
Man, these women who lead the Young Women look so young! And they have grandchildren?!? It feels very different from when I was a child in the 70s… I am so grateful for these scholarly, adventurous, faithful women!
just to back up Steve, he’s not the only one who didn’t care for that arrangement, no offense to JJ Daynes!
I usually like all the arrangements of the Choir, their High on the Mountain Top was awesome. But on the Hie to Kolob, some of the words were so drawn out that I had a hard time even deciphering the words.
#77- so was Sis Cook single til she married Bro Cook? that is pretty cool. I heard her young women’s talk last week- if you all haven’t had the chance, definitely look it up when the talks are put up on lds.org In her YW talk, she shared a great story about a eveyday spiritual experience that occurred when she ran the Boston Marathon!!!
Oops again, it is Elaine S. Dalton who had the marathon experience. (the YW talks are already up!!)
I did search and looks like Bro. Cook lost his first wife in 1984 and married Sis. Cook several years later. She has no biological children but the step children and step grandcbldren. And will now get to be a special nurturer to YW all over the world!
Speaking of the wonderful President Eyring, he appears to be ill. He is a wonderful man; here’s hoping/praying that he is blessed with a long and healthy life.
April 6, 2008 at 10:02 am
So, Monson’s presiding… does that mean he’s not going to be addressing us this morning too?
April 6, 2008 at 10:04 am
The news release said he would speak this morning.
April 6, 2008 at 10:07 am
Why do the MoTab ladies have to wear the ugliest outfits ever? And the men’s ties? Yuck. Plus they don’t match each other!
April 6, 2008 at 10:08 am
I never get tired of that choir. A stirring hymn.
April 6, 2008 at 10:10 am
I think I meant to say conducting… not presiding. Still trying to work out the kinks in my understanding of how General Conference works.
April 6, 2008 at 10:19 am
und von day prezident monson came to Hamburg…
April 6, 2008 at 10:23 am
Und I’m a dezendant uf Martin Luther?
April 6, 2008 at 10:24 am
Pres. Monson will be the concluding speaker this morning and this afternoon.
April 6, 2008 at 10:26 am
Seriously, he has charisma coming out his ears. Love this guy.
April 6, 2008 at 10:27 am
From a strictly historical perspective, this simply is an amazing talk.
April 6, 2008 at 10:28 am
I still remember that day at the BYU several years ago when Elder Uchtdorf thanked us for our “villingness to serve.” If only I spoke German as well.
April 6, 2008 at 10:29 am
Ray, care to elaborate?
April 6, 2008 at 10:31 am
I’m really digging the emphatic double-fist-shake.
April 6, 2008 at 10:33 am
Christofferson is truly a humble man.
April 6, 2008 at 10:33 am
SAP, honestly it would take a separate post. Looking back over 40 years in the church, suffice it to say that I think it was a truly unique – and deeply prophetic – talk.
April 6, 2008 at 10:33 am
fascinating talk from elder Uchdorf.
April 6, 2008 at 10:44 am
I am very impressed with President Uchdorf. I thought he was chosen because of his heritage, to help ease transition for other countries but…He is a great man with a wonderful testimony. It feels right to have him be a member of the first presidency.
April 6, 2008 at 10:49 am
Ah yes, the obligatory tithing talk. It kind of depresses me that these have to be given every time, but they are important for a lot of people.
April 6, 2008 at 10:49 am
How tough would it be to speak about tithing after the last two talks?
April 6, 2008 at 10:56 am
I adore “How Firm a Foundation.”
April 6, 2008 at 10:57 am
Let’s all Rise up in our living rooms and sing. Good thing they put the lyrics on the screen now.
I wonder what that press conference will cover today.
April 6, 2008 at 10:58 am
#21 – the reorganization of the YW Presidency
April 6, 2008 at 10:59 am
Will President Monson’s (and his Presidencie’s) legacy be the transforming of the church into a truly worldwide church, less Utah-centric and America-centric?
April 6, 2008 at 10:59 am
Have you noticed that “Betty Rubble” necklaces are in style now?
April 6, 2008 at 11:03 am
She’s brave.
April 6, 2008 at 11:03 am
Whats the deal with Betty Rubble
April 6, 2008 at 11:03 am
No.
April 6, 2008 at 11:03 am
Uh oh. I sensed another Mothers Who Know talk coming.
Thank goodness she reeled herself in on that one:)
April 6, 2008 at 11:05 am
As it is, the Church is only as America-centric as the world is America-centric. Both will change over time.
Now if the Church in America were less Utah-centric, that would be wonderful.
April 6, 2008 at 11:06 am
I think it’s funny that she goes on about how it’s a woman’s deepest calling (I don’t remember the exact wording) to nurture, but her quotations support the idea of both parents nurturing their children.

April 6, 2008 at 11:07 am
I know! The rebroadcast of yesterday’s sessions were at 11pm and I think 1 am last night, EST.
April 6, 2008 at 11:10 am
Do they all wear those microphones?
That’s the first time I’ve ever noticed one of those.
April 6, 2008 at 11:15 am
Paradox, they don’t. They’re for amplification for those who have trouble speaking loud enough for the microphone. It’s not a good sign for Pres. Packer. But I suppose the SWAT-style throat mics were out of the question.
April 6, 2008 at 11:20 am
308 seventies! Wow.
As youth we used to joke… I wonder who will be the 70th member of the 70th Quorum of the 70.
April 6, 2008 at 11:27 am
What on earth? If you could hie to kolob meets bugs bunny theme tune…
April 6, 2008 at 11:28 am
Elder Wirthlin was also wearing one of those amplification mics yesterday.
April 6, 2008 at 11:30 am
Yeah, this is a pretty bad arrangement. If You Could Hie deserves better.
April 6, 2008 at 11:31 am
If people aren’t gripping that they’ve heard it a thousand times, they’re grumpbling about the new stuff. The outfits are so gross. Whatever!
They’re cool. They sound great.
April 6, 2008 at 11:34 am
He really does miss Pres. Hinckley.
We all do.
April 6, 2008 at 11:34 am
Griping. Grumbling.
April 6, 2008 at 11:35 am
THat was a pretty impressive travelogue that Boyd K PAcker Gave.

April 6, 2008 at 11:36 am
Elder Wirthlin is eldest… followed by Perry.
April 6, 2008 at 11:36 am
Wirthlin was born in 1917.
April 6, 2008 at 11:37 am
Packer and Nelson were born in September of 1924. Nelson is one day older.
April 6, 2008 at 11:39 am
Interesting that Monson prays he can do well as “president” — it was like he couldn’t say “prophet, seer and revelator.”
April 6, 2008 at 11:40 am
kca – He’s been a prophet, seer and revelator for over 40 years; he’s been a president for two months and a sustained president for one day. “He couldn’t say” is ludicrous.

Sorry, kca, that last sentence was uncalled for. I really am sorry I typed it.
April 6, 2008 at 11:43 am
Ray – Why do you think it is that he focuses on the administrative, “president” part of his calling more than the “prophet” part of his calling then, regardless of the timing?
April 6, 2008 at 11:45 am
I don’t think he is focusing on the administrative part at all. I think that is your interpretation.
April 6, 2008 at 11:46 am
I think we wear white shirts to represent purity.
I don’t know of a group of men anywhere in the world that is more pure.
April 6, 2008 at 11:46 am
Monson only has three children? Shocking!
April 6, 2008 at 11:46 am
They look just as good on our GAs as they do on the saints in Nigeria or Ecuador or the Phillipines.
April 6, 2008 at 11:47 am
Not everyone has Rabbit blood in them like myself. (7 kids)
April 6, 2008 at 11:48 am

kca,
Yours is the sort of comment I’d make if I were using a pseudonymn and trying to be intentionally silly.
carli,
Duly noted that you’re comfortable with Brownshirts.
AB
April 6, 2008 at 11:51 am
AB, I was about to say the same thing re: kca. silly talk.
April 6, 2008 at 11:52 am
He sounds much bolder and more emphatic than I have ever heard him. It’s amazing how the prophetic mantle works.
April 6, 2008 at 11:54 am
Scott, so true. I wonder if the days of his numbered lists are over…
April 6, 2008 at 11:57 am
Truly, a remarkable address by a newly sustained prophet of God, ordained and set apart for the entire world, for such a time as this.
April 6, 2008 at 11:58 am
I’m new here and not sure about the unwritten rules about what one does and does not say. April 6, 2008 at 12:01 pm
My 5-year-old daughter just opened her eyes and ran from the room, yelling, “We’re FREE!” (Just thought I’d share that.)
April 6, 2008 at 12:02 pm
kca, I also thought that his use of the word “president” rather than prophet was interesting.
April 6, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Is it me, or does it seem like this conference has a whole has been directed towards doubting or less-active members?
April 6, 2008 at 12:05 pm
President Hinckley almost always referred to himself as ‘president’.
April 6, 2008 at 12:06 pm
As much as I loved Elder Bednar’s talking in a recent conference about not being offended, Pres. Monson’s simple invitation to “come back” is so much more effective.
April 6, 2008 at 12:07 pm
“Mommy, can daddy read me a story?”
That’s harsh!!
April 6, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Joe, my kids just repeated that whole commercial to me, laughing as they shared it.
April 6, 2008 at 12:10 pm
I was watching it with my wife and about 3-4 of the kids were in here too. I was the only one not laughing.

I’ve never figured out how women can be chaste without men also being chaste.
And, to Steve re: Hieing to Kolob. That’s the Joseph J. Daynes music that is in the 1948 hymnal. If you don’t like it, take it up w/ JJ himself.
April 6, 2008 at 12:47 pm

Oh, I see… According to lds.org, “Sister Cook inherited four wonderful children and became the grandmother of eight” when she married Brother Cook.

I though Sister Tanner did an excellent job. She both reaffirmed what Sister Beck had said but also clarified that men are nurturers, too.
April 6, 2008 at 1:43 pm
If you are not watching the between sessions biopic on Henry Eyring, you are missing out.
It is awesome.
April 6, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Speaking of the wonderful President Eyring, he appears to be ill. He is a wonderful man; here’s hoping/praying that he is blessed with a long and healthy life.
April 6, 2008 at 2:02 pm
I’ve transmitted my displeasure about the arrangment via ouija.
April 6, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Susan Winder and I both were freshman at BYU in Fall 1971. I look just as young as she does, and I have grandchildren too.
On the other hand, I was never pregnant.
But she is amazing to have no gray hair.
