This left me with a lump in my throat for a lot of reasons. Lately I’ve been stuck in the middle as the ‘good child’ while several of my sibling make poor choices and screw up their lives in various ways. My mom calls me periodically to lament her failings as a parent and all her inadequacies, and yet she is so like your grandfather in her willingness to never give up on them. I feel bad that I cannot convince her that she has not failed and have a feeling I could be writing something like this in another 20 years.
