Music for Advent

O Radix Jesse

Contemporary(ish) settings by Willan, Miškinis

O Radix Jesse, qui stas in signum populorum,
super quem continebunt reges os suum,
quem Gentes deprecabuntur:
veni ad liberandum nos, jam noli tardare.
O Root of Jesse, standing as a sign among the peoples;
before you kings will shut their mouths,
to you the nations will make their prayer:
Come and deliver us, and delay no longer.

  1. Such beautiful music! And a great chance to dust off my Latin.

  2. Kristine, listening to this with the text (thanks, btw) offers me some insight into this call for deliverance. The words, initially at least, suggest urgency and yet the composition is more sustained and not at all frenetic. Both of these two together suggest that the Lord’s deliverance is both immediate received and consistently required. After all, our need for deliverance is not a one-time event but is far more about a posture – perhaps a constant reaching out for, and gratefully receiving, the divine – rather than a singular attempt to grasp Him.
