Reasons We Didn’t Rank Stuff This Week, Ranked

It’s been a busy week! So busy, in fact, that Steve and I realized we’d deprived the 27 people who still read this series of their guidance for maintaining order in their lives. We apologize, and offer this list of reasons we haven’t been ranking things like we should be.

As always, these rankings are authoritative.

  1. Still distracted by the Star Wars trailer
  2. The closing prayer went on forever
  3. Some family in the ward needed defending
  4. Really caught up in genealogy
  5. We ran out of sacrament cups
  6. Preparations for the Ward Pancake Breakfast in July take priority
  7. My daughter refused to sing during FHE, and I told her we would wait until she made a better choice
  8. Following the admonition of Elder Ulrich von Lichtenstein, we’ve spent the past week in silence just to better understand the sound of a whisper
  9. Those snickerdoodles aren’t going to eat themselves
  10. Stupor of thought

  1. I love you guys.

What’s the verdict on the sound of a whisper?

  2. A Turtle Named Mack says:

    Shark, thou hast been jumped!

  3. This ranking business is devolving into the opening credits to Monte Python’s Holy Grail. What’s next, llamas? I’d quit you guys now, except that you’re doing such an important work defending families.

  4. Kevin Barney says:

When I was a young lawyer, I made a mistake that took some work to unwind (a banker had used a certain type of Treasury security for a defeasance escrow, a type that was not supposed to be used for that purpose, and I didn’t catch it). My senior partner and head of the firm asked me what I was thinking, and my exact words to him were: “I had a stupor of thought.” That was the only time in my entire life I have used that expression in an actual conversation (with a non-LDS person, no less), but it perfectly fit the occasion and did the trick–that was what he wanted to know, and the topic was then closed.

  5. I think this is my favorite list.

  6. Re the whisper, see here if you’re not familiar with the reference.

  7. Scott, I think we can do better than this. Let’s really focus our energies.

  8. Scott B. says:

    Agreed. Done and done.

  9. Disagree. This list is way better than the House list.

  10. thomas parkin says:

    Hee hee

  11. larryco_ says:

and the exact phrase is “stupid of thought”. I have it often.
