I was intrigued by a recent MormonLand podcast interview with Larissa Kindred, a recent Dartmouth grad and former Mormon, who conducted a survey of Mormon women regarding their feelings about garments. One of the most popular blog posts I ever did was exactly ten years ago last month. It was called Female Garments: The Underwear Business, and the post included the results of my own very informal poll of 250 Mormon women. It was the third most popular post of 2013 at BCC with almost 23K views, so it’s clearly something that people were interested in.

Saturday I biked over to Dusty Groove, a local record store. Why? Because Dusty Groove was having its once-in-an-occasional record sale, with dozens of boxes of records ($1 each!) on its third floor.[fn1] I decided to bike rather than drive because it’s only like a mile and a half from my home and there’s limited street parking around the store. (It turned out to be a smart choice: there were dozens and dozens of people digging through cardboard boxes filled with records, all of whom had gotten there somehow.

New Church Videos Explain the Temple to the General Public
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints just published a glossy series of 90-second explanations of our core temple practices.
I’m amazed at how much demystifying content these videos succeed in outlining in less than seven minutes of total video time.
Here are the highlights.
Garments are Symbols of the Atonement

I had a conversation years ago where I expressed a desire for the women’s garment pattern to change to a camisole type top. The woman I was talking to stared at me blankly and asked, “Then how would we stop women from wearing sleeveless shirts?”
I wanted to shriek.
Thankfully I did not shriek. (Though after the rant I went on, perhaps my friend would have preferred the shriek.)
Female Garments: The Underwear Business

knee length shorts – good today, bad tomorrow
The history of garments is complex. At one time they were made by members from patterns. The marks used to be cut rather than embroidered. And modifications to the styles have been made on several occasions, particularly changing the styles for women to feminize them and make them more practical (elbow and knee length vs. wrist and ankle, also the change to two-piece). The church has made changes so that they fit better, so that women have more options, to allow those serving in the military to wear them, and to use new fabrics as they’ve become available.
And yet, despite all these changes, many women find garments problematic at one time or another for a variety of reasons. On the positive side, women report finding garments spiritually comforting, a reminder of their covenants. Many also appreciate the lack of visible panty lines (at least not where you expect to see them!). I appreciate both of these things myself. Some women consider them to be very comfortable, particular for lounging around the house. But I have also experienced many of the drawbacks women discuss when only other women are present.
